Composition puzzle pieces

It is my humble opinion that composing is the best way to learn music theory. It makes you really think about when to use every musical element, and why. It also helps you to appreciate all the hard work and skill that composers put into creating the pieces we play!

This is a fun activity that can be adapted for a single student, or a group of 2-4 students. I cut out the puzzle pieces ahead of time and keep the top portion to review before starting. The fill-in-the-blanks section gives students a framework of what hand position, rhythms, etc. they can use. All those elements can be adapted to the level of the student(s) and what they’re currently learning in their lesson books.
