Creating my own flash cards has been in the works for a while, so I’m very excited about this post! I purchased these awesome flash cards from Full Voice Music a while ago and have found them to be a lot of fun for sight reading and composition practice. I wanted cards that would help my students with playing in the bass clef, so I came up with the birthday party themed cards posted below. The plan is to add more that are in different hand positions, so look out for future posts!
Here are some ways that I use the cards in my studio:
- Sight reading: Have students choose 3 or 4 cards and arrange them in whatever order they choose. Sight read.
- Composition: pick 3 cards, play, then compose your own ending! Or compose 2 bars in the middle and add your favourite party game/present/snack, etc. to the lyrics.
- Note naming: have them find all the cards with a letter name of your choosing. Eg. finding all the cards with the note C.
- Rhythm: clap the rhythm before playing, or find all the cards with a specific rhythm. Eg. eighth notes, quarter notes, eighth followed by a quarter, etc.
- Theory: these are written in G major, but I used the accidental F# instead of a key signature. If you print and laminate the cards, you could have your student write in their own key signature at the beginning.
I’m sure more ideas will come up for everyone. Hope you enjoy this free download!
