I found this genius game from Colorful Keys https://colourfulkeys.ie/piano-sight-reading-game/ . I love the versatility of being able to pick whatever musical elements you would like to include in the game!
- Grab a die and a game piece for each student (minimum 2).
- Turn a piece of music into your game board, with each bar being a space you can move to. I like to use my students’ lesson book, so they are reviewing what is familiar, and so you can flip the page to the next piece if you want to play a little longer.
- Decide which musical elements you would like to review, and write down which one corresponds to each number on the dice. For example, if I’m reviewing note reading, I could write down that 1=A, 2=B, etc. Or just use a letter die if you have one (details about where to find music-themed die can be found in my “note reading games” post here: https://songbirdmusic.blog/2024/02/09/note-reading-games/ ). If you’re reviewing rhythm, you could write 1= quarter note, 2= half note, etc. Other ideas: intervals, chords, etc.
- Roll the die, and move your piece to a measure where there is an element that matches the number on your die. For example, if you roll a 1=A, move your piece to a measure that contains a note on the A line/space.
- Optional for older students: let them choose one of these “magic number rules” or create their own: Speedy Sixes = Name 2 terms or expressive symbols in your music to move ahead 6 measures, or Tricky Twos = Swap places with your opponent on the board.
