New Game: Spy and Fly

I found this genius game from Colorful Keys https://colourfulkeys.ie/piano-sight-reading-game/ . I love the versatility of being able to pick whatever musical elements you would like to include in the game!

  1. Grab a die and a game piece for each student (minimum 2).
  2. Turn a piece of music into your game board, with each bar being a space you can move to. I like to use my students’ lesson book, so they are reviewing what is familiar, and so you can flip the page to the next piece if you want to play a little longer.
  3. Decide which musical elements you would like to review, and write down which one corresponds to each number on the dice. For example, if I’m reviewing note reading, I could write down that 1=A, 2=B, etc. Or just use a letter die if you have one (details about where to find music-themed die can be found in my “note reading games” post here: https://songbirdmusic.blog/2024/02/09/note-reading-games/ ). If you’re reviewing rhythm, you could write 1= quarter note, 2= half note, etc. Other ideas: intervals, chords, etc.
  4. Roll the die, and move your piece to a measure where there is an element that matches the number on your die. For example, if you roll a 1=A, move your piece to a measure that contains a note on the A line/space.
  5. Optional for older students: let them choose one of these “magic number rules” or create their own: Speedy Sixes = Name 2 terms or expressive symbols in your music to move ahead 6 measures, or Tricky Twos = Swap places with your opponent on the board.
