Beginner practice tips

Here are six tips for creating a consistent practice routine:

  1. If possible, position your piano or keyboard in a space that’s used frequently. Make it visible and easy to get to.

2. Ask your teacher to work on pieces you really enjoy! A pop or rock piece at the right level can be learned along-side material from a lesson book.

3. Treat yourself after: have special stickers near the piano for kids. For older kids (approx. age 8+) you could set a bigger goal and choose a larger treat. Eg. A trip to the beach once your child has practiced consistently over the summer.

4. Pair your practice time with an established activity. For example after breakfast or dinner.

5. Set a timer. Start with just 2 minutes. Stretch, play a scale and just one section of a piece two times, and you’re done. Most of the time you’ll want to continue after the timer goes off!

6. Make it about the journey, not the destination.  The only goal should be consistent practice, not the outcome of that practice – that will happen naturally in its own time!
